In the aftermath of her sister’s reign, Elizabeth I was faced with a country in religious and social turmoil. In the quest for uniformity and compromise, she decreed the Elizabethan Religious Settlement, which later evolved into the Church of England. Although her personal religious views have been much debated. She still faced threats to this relative peace from extreme factions in the form of Catholic Recusants, and Puritans.
