Heritage Festival
The 2011 Peterborough Festival kicked off with the Heritage Weekend, in the historic heart of the city centre and the stunning surroundings of the Cathedral grounds.
This was one of the festival’s most popular events. And once again, another living history extravaganza for all to enjoy, bringing to life two thousand years of history – all in one weekend.
Heritage highlights
- Renowned TV historian David Starkey gave an illuminating talk on the six wives of Henry VIII, in the Cathedral on Saturday evening.
- Costumed characters, including Henry VIII and Katharine of Aragon, Richard III, Mary Queen of Scots, Edith Cavell, Jesters, musicians and entertainers.
- Our period market and shop
- Craft market- selling the wares of local traders and craftspeople.
- The Local History Fair, with displays by over 20 local history societies, community groups and local historic attractions.
- Talks on aspects of Peterborough’s past, and demonstrations by re-enactors, plus a daily 1940s music ‘sing-a-long’ session in the talks and demonstrations marquee
- National Veterans weekend in St John’s Square, with displays by veterans groups and armed forces.

If our History Society wished to be involved in the Heritage Festival how do we obtain full details? Who do we contact?

Just want to say that we had a great time at the Festival. I had a stall in the craft area in the Cloisters and it was really well organised and run by Red Barn Crafts who did a fantastic job. It was a shame we were a little bit out of the way, but it was still a worthwhile event. Loved the costumes and the Jester was brilliant. Can't wait for next year :)
