Current and Future Research

Beyond Flag Fen itself, there have been developer lead digs in the area around Flag Fen which have provided a tantalising glimpse into the lives of the Bronze Age farmers that built the ritual causeway.

Flag Fen plans to host exhibitions displaying new finds as information becomes available. The first of these was a display funded by Hanson about the recent discoveries at Must Farm. We hope to be able to begin displaying artefacts from these excavations as the come out of conservation.

In 2008, with the support of a grant from WREN, volunteers at Flag Fen worked with a professional archaeologist to record and assess the condition of the exposed section of the Fen Causeway Roman Road ahead of covering the section to protect it for the future.

Less than 10% of the site has been dug. Excavations in 2002 and 2005 indicated that parts of the monument are drying out. If this happens, all the information will be lost. As a result, Fenland Archaeological Trust began work with Atkins Engineers and Peterborough City Council in 2008 to assess the drying out of the site.
