John Clare

We have a large collection of original manuscripts from the 19th century romantic poet John Clare.

Known as the Peasant Poet, he was born at Helpston in 1793, died in Northampton Asylum in 1864, and was buried in his native village.

Many of his personal belongings are on display, while his original manuscripts are available to study by prior arrangement with the Museum. For more information about John Clare, contact The John Clare Society.
