Peterborough Cathedral

Historic Peterborough Tour

Your essential and entertaining guide to Peterborough’s past!

Find out more about the fascinating and often undiscovered history of Peterborough, from the foundation of the Saxon abbey to the modern city. Discover the secrets of the Cathedral precincts, find out why the river is important as the heart of the city and hear about the many enthralling stories and personalities connected to our past.

Find out why some of our earliest history is in the floors of the Queensgate shopping centre, who buried two Queens in the cathedral, and how Dickens and Shakespeare have both immortalised people from the city. Learn why we had a radio station called Hereward and why French prisoners were kept in the area.

A must for visitors to the city or local residents alike!

We also do a version of this tour for younger children (5 -11 year olds) during the summer. Please check our Historic Peterborough for children tour page for more details.
