Space - Fact & Fiction

The UK has been at the cutting edge of space exploration, both fact and fiction for over 100 years; from H.G Wells, Arthur C. Clarke and Douglas Adams’ stories of science fiction, to the ground breaking work of the UK Space Agency, British engineers and scientists.

What was once thought possible only in science fiction is gradually becoming science fact and part of our everyday lives, including mobile phones that talk to us and people living and working in space.

It is undoubtedly the dreams of science fiction writers that has helped to drive the imagination of scientists to explore what is actually possible.

“Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.” – Douglas Adams (1952-2001) The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

Victorian Optical Toys

Victorian Optical Toys explores a range of fascinating toys from the 19th century.

These toys turned still images into moving pictures, creating a magical pastime...

Discover what a stereoscope, phenakistocope, thaumatrope or kaleidoscope does, and try them out for yourselves with this hands-on exhibition!

Simple cameras and ‘philosophical’ toys have been around for centuries, but the Victorians were the first to produce a variety of different machines that changed still pictures into moving ones.

Each interactive in this exhibition is a different type of toy to enjoy.

Some make pictures move, some turn them 3D and some use mirrors to make special effects happen.

Even today, optical toys continue to fascinate!
